What the installer does
Windows
- Delivered as an NSIS (Nullsoft) setup program (.exe) for x64 and x86.
- Installs for the current user only, so administrator rights are normally not needed.
- No custom silent switch is declared; winget falls back to its default for this installer type (
/S). - Declared install modes: silent.
- Registers the
http://andhttps://link protocol. - Associates with the file types
.htmand.html. - Upgrades install over the existing version.
macOS
- Delivered as a disk image (.dmg) for Apple silicon and Intel.
- Installs the app
Tor Browser.appinto the Applications folder. - The app updates itself, so it may be newer than the version Homebrew lists.
- A full “zap” removal also deletes up to 5 support, cache and preference locations in your home folder.
Overview
The Tor software protects you by bouncing your communications around a distributed network of relays run by volunteers all around the world, it prevents somebody watching your Internet connection from learning what sites you visit, it prevents the sites you visit from learning your physical location, and it lets you access sites which are blocked.

Tor Browser 16.0 is now available for Desktop and Android. This is our first stable release based on Firefox ESR 153, incorporating a year's worth of changes that have been shipped upstream in Firefox. As part of this process, we've also completed our annual ESR transition audit, where we reviewed and addressed over 270 Bugzilla issues covering changes in Firefox that could negatively affect the privacy and security of Tor Browser users. What's new for Desktop? Redesigned Settings Tor Browser connects millions of people to the Tor network (and by extension, the free and open internet) out of the box. However, for those who need to circumvent advanced censorship, boost their security level, or tailor their browsing experience, clear and easy-to-use Settings are essential. To that end, Tor Browser 16.0 introduces a complete redesign of the Settings experience based on a parallel redesign shipped in Firefox in June. Improvements include a cleaner layout, updated navigation, and clearer labels and descriptions aimed at making settings easier to find, understand, and manage. Windows Package Signature Issue The DigiCert EV code‑signing certificate we use to sign Windows installation packages expired on September 1st and is being renewed. This delay caused Windows users installing Tor Browser 15.0.21 and 15.0.22 from scratch to see “bad signature” warnings. As a temporary workaround, Windows users can install Tor Browser 15.0.20 (the latest correctly signed version) and rely on automatic updates (signed with a different key) to reach the current version. Users who prefer to download the latest version directly, ignoring the certificate expiration warning, can do so from the Tor Project distribution directory.
