What the installer does

Windows

Delivered as a standalone setup program (.exe) for x64.
Installs for the current user only, so administrator rights are normally not needed.
Supports unattended install with --silent.
Declared install modes: interactive and silent.
Registers the etcher:// link protocol.
Upgrades install over the existing version.

macOS

Delivered as a disk image (.dmg) for Intel (x64) and Apple silicon (ARM64).
Installs the app balenaEtcher.app into the Applications folder.
Requires macOS 13 or later.
On uninstall, Homebrew asks the app to quit.
A full “zap” removal also deletes up to 5 support, cache and preference locations in your home folder.

Overview

Etcher is a powerful OS image flasher built with web technologies to ensure flashing an SDCard or USB drive is a pleasant and safe experience. It protects you from accidentally writing to your hard-drives, ensures every byte of data was written correctly, and much more. It can also directly flash Raspberry Pi devices that support USB device boot mode.
